Sunshine Coast tap water is treated and safe to drink by regulatory standards. But safe and enjoyable aren't always the same thing. Many residents notice a chlorine taste, occasional discolouration, or are concerned about what's happening to their pipes and appliances over time.
After years of working in homes across Caloundra, Maroochydore, Buderim and the wider Sunshine Coast, the question I get asked more than almost any other is: "Do I actually need a water filter?"
Here's my honest take.
What's Actually in Sunshine Coast Tap Water?
The Sunshine Coast Council supplies water drawn primarily from the Baroon Pocket Dam and Eudlo Creek catchments. It's treated at the Eudlo Water Treatment Plant using a combination of:
- Chlorination — to disinfect and kill bacteria and pathogens
- Fluoridation — added at controlled levels for dental health (Queensland mandate)
- Coagulation and filtration — to remove sediment and turbidity
- pH adjustment — to reduce pipe corrosion
The water meets the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines (ADWG). That's the baseline. But those guidelines allow for levels of chlorine, disinfection byproducts (like trihalomethanes), and naturally occurring minerals that some people prefer not to consume daily.
Why People Choose to Filter Their Water
The most common reasons Sunshine Coast residents invest in water filtration:
- Chlorine taste and smell — the most common complaint. Chlorine is necessary for safety in the network but can make water taste flat or chemical.
- Pipe sediment — older homes can have rust or mineral sediment enter the supply through ageing pipes.
- Hard water — Sunshine Coast water has moderate hardness. Hard water shortens the life of appliances, causes scale build-up in kettles and shower heads, and can dry out skin and hair.
- Peace of mind — for families with young children, immunocompromised members, or simply a preference for cleaner water.
Types of Water Filtration Systems
1. Under-Sink Filter (Point of Use)
Installed under the kitchen sink, these filter water at a dedicated tap before it reaches your glass. A good under-sink filter will remove chlorine, sediment, heavy metals and cysts. Prices range from around – installed, with filter cartridges replaced annually.
Best for: Drinking water quality on a budget. Most popular option.
2. Whole-House Filtration (Point of Entry)
Installed at the water main, a whole-house filter treats all water entering your home. Benefits include softer skin and hair, protected appliances (dishwasher, hot water system, washing machine), and clean water from every tap.
Best for: Scale reduction, appliance protection, and families who want filtered water throughout the home.
3. Reverse Osmosis (RO) System
The most thorough filtration available for drinking water. RO systems remove virtually all dissolved solids, fluoride, heavy metals and microcontaminants. Typically installed under-sink with a storage tank.
Best for: The highest quality drinking water. Worth considering if you have specific health concerns.
4. UV Purification
Uses ultraviolet light to kill bacteria, viruses and cysts without chemicals. Often combined with a sediment pre-filter. Doesn't remove dissolved chemicals.
Best for: Tank water systems or those wanting biological protection.
Which System Is Right for You?
If you just want clean, great-tasting drinking water — an under-sink carbon filter is the most cost-effective choice. If you're also concerned about your hot water system, appliances and overall water quality throughout the house, a whole-house system makes more sense.
The best approach is to get your water tested and choose a system based on what's actually in your supply, not just marketing claims. Jay can advise on this when providing a quote.
"I've seen hot water systems in Sunshine Coast homes fail early due to scale build-up from untreated hard water. A decent filter pays for itself in appliance longevity alone."
Brands We Use & Recommend
We don't install generic or unknown brands. For water filtration, we work with two of Australia's most trusted filtration manufacturers:
Our sourcing policy: We supply all filtration products through Reece Plumbing — Australia's leading trade supplier. We don't purchase cheap systems or cartridges from online marketplaces. What we install, we stand behind.
How Much Does a Water Filter Cost in Queensland?
